Production
Statement by

having traveled to Guatemala before, I was not really sure what to expect. When
Director Mario Rosales asked me to accompany him as producer, hesitant at first,
I found that it would be a wonderful chance to meet new people, similar in language, unique
in its own culture. However small in size, this country makes up for with an
overwhelming passion and support for the arts, its heritage and its people. "The
Killing of Diogenes", Mario Rosale's film adaptation based on the short story
by acclaimed author Augusto Monterrosa, was astonishingly filmed in only nine
days. With thorough planning and organization, numerous supportive extras, talented
actors, locations, crew and ideas were pulled together to create the artistic
vision that became the ever anticipated film. The MFA chronicle of the program
in Media Arts production refered to this film as "one of the bigest short
film productions, not only at CCNY, but in Guatemala as well." Working
with a very limited budget had its difficulties and challenges. Through innovative
ideas, efficiency and community support, we were able to manage our funds, creating
first class scenes, and powerful impressions. One scene that I will never
forget was in the Plaza Mayor de la Constitution, a place of gathering for market
after visiting the Metropolitan Cathedral. An energy and cooperation of about
2000 people, the eyes of many, each telling their own story, I knew this was going
to be a powerful film. Looking
through the crowd as if translucent, the smiles of most, there was an unspoken
truth that many may be facing the same family dysfunction and abuse, unaware to
the idea of Mario's vision, the representation of a dog, but a reality that can
be shared and understood by Guatemalans, as well as the international
community.
